  • The Texas A&M University (TAMU) College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) is seeking the Director of Veterinary Medical Park to lead their team! This individual will oversee and direct operations of the Veterinary Medical Park (VMP), which is a facility that hosts all aspects of research using traditional agriculture animal species. They will ensure animals used in VMP’s research endeavors are cared for according to the standards set by various regulatory agencies and also ensures that the facility maintains Association of Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation. The director works with researchers to help facilitate their research using VMP facilities and will be engaged in training veterinary students in integrated animal care and professional and critical skills.


Required Education and Experience:

o    Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

o    Ten years of related experience in large animal veterinary medicine and/or farm management

Required Licenses and Certifications:

o    Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas

o    Valid driver license or must be able to obtain State of Texas class “C” vehicle driver license within 30 days of employment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

o    Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

o    Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

o    Experience in large animal veterinary medicine and large animal handling

o    Experience with farm and herd management practices

o    Teaching experience in integrated animal care, and professional and veterinary clinical skills

o    Experience developing research protocols and budgets

o    Supervisory experience

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

o    Documented clinical competence in large animal veterinary medicine

o    Good interpersonal communication skills


o    Ensures animals that are used for research, testing, and teaching receive adequate and appropriate veterinary care and are reported during weekly veterinary rounds

o    Supervises three budgeted staff members

o    Ensures that United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Texas Animal Health Commission's concerns regarding bio-security and bio-containment are adequately addressed

o    Appropriately manages the VMP facilities, pastures, and other resources to maximize their ability to be utilized by researchers

o    Actively participates in the development of user rates using a TAMU rate study process

o    Oversees the remodeling and replacement of existing research, testing, and teaching animal holding facilities to ensure that appropriate facilities are available at the Veterinary Medical Park to house the Institutional Animal Care and use committee approved research and teaching animals

o    Works with researchers to help facilitate their research using Park facilities

o    Consults with researchers developing grant proposals to provide advice on appropriate animal models and costs associated with conducting research at the VMP

o    Ensures that preventative medicine programs and herd health management programs are provided for animals housed at the Veterinary Medical Park - this duty requires the utilization of farm truck and all-terrain vehicles to survey the facilities and pastures and animals within Veterinary Medical Park

o    Trains veterinary students as appropriate for experience and expertise including integrated animal care and professional and clinical skills

o    Performs other duties as assigned
