Orthopedic Surgery - Dr. Bill Liska
July 8th 1-4PM at Karbach Brewery
Speaker: Dr. Bill Liska
Topic: Orthopedic Surgery
Iditarod Sled Dogs in Alaska do not have hip problems. Our patients do!
What do Canine and Feline Hip Problems and the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Alaska have in common? Not much except the fact that Dr. Bill Liska, an HCVMA member for 41 years, has dedicated time during the last 15 years to both.
This presentation will be a fun fusion of the excitement of working with racing dogs and helping companion animals with hip arthritis. Racing sled dogs do not slow down because they do not have hip dysplasia. Dogs and cats in our practice that slow down due to hip pathology can ultimately recover to have pain free hips with full function to return to normal activity – whatever that might be. Many interesting points will be discussed about how sled dogs have evolved so they rarely have hip or knee injuries. Facts will also be covered about how technology has evolved to treat dogs in our practice population that do have hip problems.
Dr. Liska is well known in Houston since 1976. He is recognized internationally for pioneering the development of total hip and knee replacements in dogs and cats. He has completed more than 2000 joint replacement procedures. He is the founder of Global Veterinary Specialists working primarily in Houston and San Antonio. He is a mentor for many surgeons around the USA and Europe.
